On a day filled with love, don’t forget to love thyself. We often focus on the special people in our lives and often overlook how important it is to love yourself. I love to use metaphors as examples! If you have ever flown in a plane, you will hear the flight attendant announcing safety procedures. In case there is an emergency, they require you to secure your oxygen mask before securing your child’s. Self love is similar to the oxygen masks. If we do not first take care of ourselves, we are not able to take care of others.
This Valentine’s day make loving yourself a priority. Try one of these 5 ways to show yourself some love.
1. Treat yourself (Self-care)
Spoil yourself, reward yourself and do something selfish for once. Think of something you would feel guilty doing for yourself, and do it! You deserve it!
2. Affirmations (Self talk)
It’s often easier to highlight other people’s positive characteristics, try acknowledging your own. Fill in the blank.
“I am great at ____________________.”
“I am awesome because ________________________.”
3. Look at yourself in a mirror (Self love)
We all have areas of our body we wish we can change. Try looking at yourself in the mirror. This will help you to be more comfortable in your skin. Love your curves, scares and imperfections. After all, they are what make you uniquely beautiful!
4. Be grateful (Self-reflection)
Look around you and see all the ways you are blessed. Acknowledge your blessings. Try to make this a daily habit, it may help to put it in your daily routine. For example, while brushing your teeth before you go to sleep you can remind yourself of one thing you are grateful for. “Today I am thankful for _______________.”
5. Set boundaries (it’s ok to be Selfish)
It is okay to say NO! …and don’t feel guilty about it. When we give too much of ourselves we often feel unappreciated and resent the effort we put in.
